Refo Conference in Budapest: Revolt, Violence and Memory

On May 22-23, 2014 the international conference Revolt, Violence and Memory: Peasant Uprisings in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe will be organized at Budapest by the Institute of History, Research Centre for the Humanities (RCH), Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS) and Refo500. The major aim of the conference, held on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Hungarian peasant uprising of 1514, is to re-contextualize this uprising and revolts in early modern Europe more generally by adopting the interdisciplinary and comparative methods of social and cultural history.

Cooperation agreement

Pál Fodor, Acting Director General of the Research Centre for the Humanities of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA BTK) and Péter Farbaky, Director General of Budapest History Museum signed an Agreement of Cooperation on March 31, 2014. The two institutions (from the MTA BTK part, especially the Institute of History, Institute of Archeology and Institute of Art History) have had cooperation for decades in the research of important sites and events of the Hungarian medieval history, including organizing conferences and exhibitions together.
Slovak–Hungarian Bilingual Journal of History

A new bilingual, Slovak–Hungarian historical journal (Kor(r)idor. Szlovák–Magyar Történeti Folyóirat/Slovensko–maďarský historický časopis) has been founded in cooperation of the Research Institute of the National Self-Government of Slovaks in Hungary, the Institute of History of the Research Center of Humanities of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of History of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the Forum Minority Research Institute. The editorial board consists of members of the founding institutions (one member from each institute; our Institute of History is represented by Csaba Katona, fellow of the Research Assistance Team). József Demmel editor, fellow of the Research Institute of the National Self-Government of Slovaks in Hungary were interviewed by the Slovak newspaper L'udové Noviny about the aim, the plans and the significance of the new journal (the interview can be read here. The goal of the new periodical is to provide a permanent bilingual platform which will enable continuous dialogue on history and better understanding between the two countries and nations; presenting and intermediating the results of scientific research activities towards Slovak and Hungarian professional public, the students and the inquirers; and successful exploration of the common past. Lectures on Transylvania in New York by our colleagues

Attila Pók, Deputy Director of the Institute of History, RCH HAS, presently guest professor of Columbia University of New York organized a lecture series titled The Cultural Legacy of Transylvania as the annual event of the Istvan Deak Visiting Professorship at Columbia University at the Consulate General of Hungary in New York, on December 10, 2013, in cooperation with Columbia University Donald and Blinken European Institute, Columbia Harriman Institute, Columbia East Central European Center, the Consulate General of Hungary in New York, and the Balassi Institute. Two of the lectures were held by research fellows of our Institute of History: Stefano Bottoni (Szeklerland in the 20th century: an internal periphery?) and Teréz Oborni (The „Golden Age” of Transylvania – the 17th Century).

Closing events of the Bethlen Memorial Year

On November 12, 2013, a Memorial Exhibition of Bethlen entitled The code: Bethlen 1613 was opened in the Hungarian National Museum remembering that 400 years ago, on 23 October, 1613, Gabriel Bethlen ascended the throne. After the welcome speech of László Csorba, Director General of the Museum, Pál Fodor, the Director General of the Research Centre for Humanities, HAS, opened the exhibition with some thoughts about the difficulties of the formation of the Principality of Transylvania, the new state in early modern Hungarian history, its place in the Ottoman world and its memory today.

New Results of Joint Bulgarian–Hungarian Historical Research

In accordance with the activities undertook in the Bulgarian–Hungarian Mobility Project and the cooperation agreement signed by both academic institutes, the HAS RCH Institute of History published two volumes consisting of the lectures given at the 2012 May conference and workshop meeting of the Bulgarian–Hungarian Joint Committee of Historians in Sofia. The work is entitled Bulgaria and Hungary at War (1912–1918); Regions, Borders, Societies, Identities in Central and Southeast Europe, 17th–21st Centuries. The publication was supported by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

The forth issue of World History (Világtörténet) for 2013 has been published! The contents of the issue can be read here.
The journal World History is published by the Institute of History of the Research Centre for the Humanities of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The four volumes of World History contain essays by Hungarian and foreign scholars on various topics pertaining to world history, as well as reviews on the secondary literature published in Hungary and abroad. The language of the journal is Hungarian, but each article includes an abstract in English.

Hungarian Wine, Slavic Brandy? – Alcohol in Reform-Era Hungary

Dr Alexander Maxwell (Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand) discussed the development of alcoholic culture in Hungary between 1825 and 1848. The paper represented part of a larger research project inspired by the stories of the traveller John Paget. The author studies behavioral forms of Nationalism in lifestyle, drinking habits, clothing, sexuality, facial hair, etc.
Balkan studies conferences with Hungarian researchers

The research fellows of the History Institute, RCH HAS have participated several international conferences of Balkan studies in 2013.
On October 25–26, 2013, the annual conference of AIESEE (Association Internationale d’Etudes du Sud-Est Européen) was organized in cooperation with the Ivo Pilar Institute of Social Sciences in Zagreb. Three research fellows of the History Institute had lectures at the conference: Dénes Sokcsevits (The Images of the Hungarians and Croatians in the early 20th century), Árpád Hornyák (The Image of Hungary and the Hungarians in the Yugoslav Foreign Policy 1918–1945) and Gábor Demeter (Do ancient stereotypes prevail and what political ideas do they serve? The image of Balkan peoples through the eyes of Hungarian politicians /Lajos Thallóczy and István Burián/ and travellers of the 19th century).
International Conference in Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca)

An international conference was held in Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca, Romania) about Bethlen and Europe on October 24–26, 2013, organized in cooperation of several institutes: the Hungarian-language Babes-Bolyai University of Kolozsvár, the Transylvanian Museum Society, the Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest, the Debrecen University and the Institute of History, Research Centre for Humanities of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The conference took place in the Hungarian History Institute of the Babes-Bolyai University. The program can be read here and in Romanian here.
